PVACCEPT
Project Aims and Finance

PVACCEPT was a German-Italian research and demonstration project from 2001 to 2004, which was funded by the European Commission within the programme "Innovation and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises". The project, which was initiated by architects in Berlin, aimed above all at developing marketable solar modules for electricity generation (photovoltaic modules), the innovative design of which would enable new possibilities of integration into old buildings, historical sites, the urban space and landscapes. Thus a bigger acceptance for photovoltaics should be created to support the European aims of sustainable development, environmentally-friendly energy generation and "soft" tourism in the long run. The complex project included acceptability studies and life cycle assessments.

Project Results

The results of the project are set on different levels:
- innovative products (photovoltaic modules)
- built solar plants, which demonstrate some
of the main innovative design possibilities
that were developed by the project
- acceptability study in different parts
- the research report, which includes the life
cycle analyses of the innovative modules
- itinerant exhibition in different languages
- the bilingual book Solar Design, which goes
beyond the scope of the project and
includes a detailed chapter on the
technological basics as well as the
presentation of 38 best practice examples of
  photovoltaic installations in old buildings,
  urban space and landscapes

Innovative Modules and Demonstration Objects

The project succeeded in developing photovoltaic modules with innovative features concerning formats, colours and surfaces and to install them in different buildings, partly under monument protection, as well as in landscapes. Thus it was proved that modern technological building elements can be integrated sensitively and inconspicuously and don't have to be in contradiction to the preservation of the heritage.

Final Report

The final report of the project, which was presented at the beginning of 2005, includes not only a specification of the procedure and the course of the project, but also the presentation of the innovatively designed modules and demonstration objects, extensive questionings concerning the acceptability, as well as the main results of the life cycle analyses, which were carried out.
